Dealing out history

The
third and final historical card deck
produced by the Polk County Genealogical Society, Edition 3.0, is
now available
at the PCGS Library on the southeast corner of the Bolivar
square.
Each of the 52 cards in the deck features a different picture
from Polk County’s history. Each card is sponsored
by a business or individual. Pictures include Polk County
businesses and residents.
“It’s something you can play with your children,”
said Susan Sparks, Polk County Genealogical Society president.
“It’s a medium to explore history with the younger
generation.”
This deck of playing cards costs $10. A set of all three decks
— the first one with historical Polk County pictures,
the second featuring military personnel and the most recent
release — is available for $25.
That is a $7 discount off buying them separately.
“The goal is to get people interested in history, getting
children talking about history and asking questions,” Sparks
said.
Money raised from the sale of the card decks supports the PCGS
mission of preserving family histories in Polk County.
The PCGS Library is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday,
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The phone number is 777-2820.
The PCGS Web site is at www.pcgsmo.com.
Card
decks
featuring military personnel now available at PCGS Library

The
wait is over for the second set of
collectible playing cards produced by the Polk County
Genealogical Society.
"Saluting Our Heroes" features military personnel with
current or historical connections to Polk County. A different
veteran,
sponsored by businesses or individuals, is pictured on each card.
The decks cost $10 each. Proceeds will be used by PCGS to support
the preservation of family history, with a portion
of the proceeds being donated to the John Playter Rotary Park
under development by the Bolivar Rotary Club.
"The society's decision to donate a portion of the proceeds
to the John Playter Rotary Park was based on enlarging
the educational impact of the military deck of cards," said
Susan Sparks, PCGS president. "The money that has been
designated from the sales of the collectible playing cards will
be earmarked for an educational board in the Freedom Plaza,
honoring Polk County's involvement in the Civil War."
Freedom Plaza will include educational boards dedicated to
Playter's life and his involvement in World War II,
but other boards will be dedicated to providing information about
other wars.
"We envision additional learning boards that would
chronologically in time show people Polk Countians' contributions
of service on the way to freedom," said Tim Erickson, Rotary
past-president and coordinator of the park project. "We're
very
committed to the educational aspect of this. We want to have a
place where children can go and think about what people have
done through the past and will need to continue to do to maintain
our freedoms."
A third deck of cards featuring Polk County places and people is
planned for next year.
The PCGS Library is on the southeast side of the Bolivar square
and will have extended hours this week
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Wednesday) through Saturday. Normal
hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday,
Friday and Saturday. For more information, call 777-2820 or visit

Polk
County's
First Souvenir Deck of Cards!

They're here! Polk County Genealogical Society is
pleased to announce their newest item for sale,
a deck of collectible playing cards featuring historical places
and people of Polk County.
The 55 cards, sponsored by businesses and
individuals, feature photos with
educational facts and highlights of Polk County history. The
cards will generate
memories of by-gone days, families and acquaintances.
The cards come in a tin with a
picture of the PCGS Library on the top.
The collectors' edition "Souvenir Deck of Polk County,
Missouri" is available
for $12 each at the Polk County Genealogical Library on the
southeast corner
of the Bolivar square.
A limited supply of cards is
available. Funds raised through the project will be used
by PCGS to support the preservation of family history.
President Susan Sparks came up with the idea after her husband
came home with a unique souvenir.
"My husband came back from the Ohio State Fair with a
souvenir deck with historic images of the Ohio
State Fair." She thought that Polk County ought to have
something like that, too. The society started
the project in January of 2007 and the cards arrived in Bolivar
last week.
PCGS is now seeking sponsorships for the second edition of the
playing cards that will be
a military deck with cards featuring veterans who have served
our
country. These veterans do not
have to be Polk Countians but must have Polk County ties. For
instance, someone living in Polk County
whose ancestor fought in the Civil War in Ohio could sponsor a
card for that veteran. It does not have to be
Civil War veterans, either--any veteran of any war will be
accepted, as long as there are Polk County ties to the veteran.
The library's hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday
and Saturday.
Remember, being limited edition, they are collectible. When this
edition has expired, no more will be available.
