January

The regular meeting of the Polk County Genealogical Society was held Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the PCGS Research Facility on the square in Bolivar.  President Susan Sparks called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm.  Everyone introduced themselves.  There were 16 members and 1 guest present.  A list of those attending can be found in the secretary’s notebook.

Minutes of the December meeting were approved as read.

There was no treasurer’s report due to the illness of Treasurer, Julie Trout.

Susan presented a proposal to the group that we spend approximately $1450 to repair the microfilm reader/printer. Both mother boards need to be replaced. The repair will be guaranteed for one year. The members present approved to spend money for the repair.

The program for the evening was entitled “You think you know what we do” and was presented by the volunteers of PCGS who shared what they do at the library.

February

The regular meeting of the Polk County Genealogical Society was held Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the PCGS Research Facility on the square in Bolivar.  President Susan Sparks called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.  Everyone introduced themselves.  There were 24 members and 5 guests present.  A list of those attending can be found in the secretary’s notebook.

Minutes of the January meeting were approved as read.

The treasurer’s report for December, 2012, and January, 2013, were presented as follows.

As of December 31, 2012

 Regular Checking            $  3489.31

 Supplemental Checking   $18,428.08

 Petty Cash                        $       95.61

Total of $22,0002.00 for the three main accounts. Of this, $6,104.70 is History Book II money that has been set aside (can’t be touched), so the adjusted total of money immediately available to us is $15,897.30 for the three main accounts as of December 31.

As of January 31, 2013

Regular Checking            $   3317.20

Supplemental Checking   $16,739.50

Petty Cash                       $       81.64

Total of $20,138.34 for the three main accounts. Of this, $6,134.70 is History Book II money that has been set aside (can’t be touched), so the adjusted total of money immediately available to us is $14,003.64 for the three main accounts as of January 31.

Membership is 233 as of January 31, 2013

The following topics were discussed.

* Since our last meeting two of our active members have passed away. Sympathies were sent to the families of Lula Kent and Sylvia Thomas.  A memorial tree is being created upstairs for all members who have passed away. Please check the list on the counter to add names of deceased members.

* Membership dues are now due.

* The microfilm reader has been repaired.

* We have ordered and received three books concerning the Arkansas donation lands.

* A final deadline has been set for July 4 for the history book.

Susan shared that Pat Douglas has purchased Dan and Stan’s Drug Store and plans to restore it to the original façade. The original architect drawings and abstract have been located and the library has copies of them.

Our speaker for the evening was Jeff Patrick, official librarian at Wilson’s Creek Battlefield. He shared the events of the battle at Wilson’s Creek, which was the 2nd major battle of the Civil War and the 1st battle west of the Mississippi.

Our speaker next month will be Ed Hagerman who will be speaking about FFA (Future Farmers of America),

The regular monthly meeting of the Polk County Genealogical Society was held Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the PCGS facility on the square in Bolivar, MO.  President Susan Sparks called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Introductions were made.  There were 19 members and 1 guest present.  A list of those attending can be found in the secretary's notebook.   Julie Trout read the minutes from the February meeting on behalf of Secretary Leta Gass, who was absent.  The minutes were approved as read.   Treasurer Julie Trout presented her report.

Regular Checking = $ 3478.04

Supplemental Checking = $16,740.91

Petty Cash = $ 119.40

Total of $20,338.35 for the three main accounts. Of this, $6189.70 is History Book II money that has been set aside, so the adjusted total of money immediately available to us is $14,148.65 for the three accounts as of February 28.

MEMBERSHIP is 228 as of February 28, 2013.

PCGS is holding a basic genealogy workshop on Thursday, April 25 which will be repeated on Saturday, April 27.  It is free but we would like those attending to pre-register.

Susan turned the meeting over to Ben Gravely, PCGS member and officer, who spoke on Cable Mill, located on in northern Polk County on the Pomme de Terre River.

The regular meeting of the Polk County Genealogical Society was held Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the PCGS Research Facility on the square in Bolivar.  President Susan Sparks called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm.  Everyone introduced themselves.  There were 26 members and 1 guest present.  A list of those attending can be found in the secretary’s notebook.

Minutes of the March meeting, recorded by Julie Trout, were read by Secretary Leta Gass and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given by Leta in the absence of Treasurer Julie Trout. The report is as follows:

 As of March 31, 2013

  Regular Checking = $3361.05

  Supplemental checking = $16,826.62

  Petty Cash = $134.93

 Total of $32,322.60 for the three main accounts.

Of this, $6238.70 is History Book II money that has been set aside (can’t be touched), so the adjusted total of money immediately available to us is $14.083.90 for the three accounts as of March 31.

Membership is 229 as of March 31, 2013. Approximately 53 of these need to renew ASAP for 2013 or they will be dropped.

Susan asked that if we happen to see people playing on the steps on the front of our building to ask them to not do that. Young people have been observed climbing on and around the railings.

There is still time to sign up for our beginning genealogy classes on April 25 and 27. 

The final deadline for the History Book II is July 4. Betty Doyle reported we have 159 stories as of now and many more are needed. Everyone was encouraged to write stories as we need a lot more.

Our speaker for the evening was Shawn Thacker, SBU student and volunteer at the PCGS Library. He spoke of using technology with genealogy research. He had some of his research to share with the group to show how he incorporates technology with his research.

Our next meeting will be May 2 with member Leta Gass sharing information about the Polk Counties in the United States.
